From Parts to Patterns: Unpacking the Vertical Story of Fractions and Proportions (Part 2)

In this second session, we continue building the vertical progression of fractions into ratios and proportional reasoning. Last time, we explored tables, scale factors, and the constant of proportionality. In this session, we extend that understanding by examining discrete quantities and introducing the double number line as a powerful visual representation for scaling. Participants will connect equivalent ratios to proportions, recognizing proportions as equations that state two ratios are equal. Emphasis will be placed on mathematical structure and repeated reasoning—helping teachers see how multiplicative thinking develops across grade levels and how representations make that thinking visible.

The Research to Practice Series features professional development seminars led by staff members of the School Success Center, a unit within the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Delaware. The Research to Practice Series fosters and promotes all educators as instructional leaders by synthesizing and practicing research and evidence-based practices, allowing for immediate classroom and school application.
Our Presenters: Terresa Dawson and Rachel Miller
Terresa Dawson has served as a math specialist for the past eight years, bringing a strong commitment to improving mathematics teaching and learning. Previously, she spent 12 years teaching middle school math in the Greater Philadelphia area. She studied Elementary Education and Instructional Leadership with a focus in Special Education. Terresa is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership at Neumann University and is passionate about expanding students’ access to future academic and career opportunities.
Rachel Miller has 18 years of experience teaching and leading in elementary and secondary schools. She taught middle and high school mathematics in New York City and San Antonio before moving into instructional and operational leadership roles across private, public, and charter settings. She also served as the founding school leader of KIPP Poder Academy in San Antonio. For the last two years, Rachel has been a Senior School Improvement Specialist for the School Success Center at the University of Delaware. She holds degrees from Princeton University, The City College of New York, and Trinity University.
